24 ( +1 | -1 ) whats yours --greatest matches that did not happen . mine are Lasker vs, Rubinstein, Lasker vs. Pillsbury , Capablanca vs. Alekhine rematch AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST ONE THAT ALMOST HAPPENED FISCHER VS, KARPOV. What are yours and comments . yours bluebabygirl .
I agree with your selection. I only would like to have had the opportunity to see a real fair matches between Karpov and Kortchnoi. Kortchnoi played with his family practicaly imprisioned by KGB, just to press him. That wasn't fair. I think that things would be different if Kortchnoi could have had his family with him. Karpov's behavior was unethical and repulsive. He could refuse to play under those circumstances.

14 ( +1 | -1 ) I have a question for you BBG!Who would win? Morphy or Tal! And who would have the most beautiful game of the match? Who would have the most brilliancies? Who would you want to win?
peppe_l
16 ( +1 | -1 ) My "dream matches"Morphy - Staunton, Morphy - Steinitz, Lasker - Rubinstein, Alekhine - Capablanca, Fischer - Karpov and if we assume Fischer beat Karpov in 75, Fischer - Kasparov...

16 ( +1 | -1 ) I'm with ..Peppe all the way! I especially wish Fischer and Morphy had continued to play. I do believe Morphy would have made quick work of Staunton though ..

58 ( +1 | -1 ) r_lawrenceI agree with you that Morphy would have beaten Staunton, even the 1843 version, but I don't think it would have been a blowout. As a matter of fact,I think Morphy would have found it tough going against Staunton's plodding, defensive style. Staunton would have frustrated Morphy, and maybe Paul would get impatient, trying to force matters, which was suicide against Staunton. Howard would have won his fair share of games, tho his age,and rustiness would be the biggest factors in his eventual loss.
peppe_l
95 ( +1 | -1 ) YepIndeed Morphy had problems in certain type of positions, namely in closed structures. Also you have a point when you mention the possibility of frustration (it had happened before in times when Morphy had to play relatively good opponents who employed closed openings). Staunton was an excellent positional player and some of his games look surprisingly modern even now, for example many of the ones where he used his trademark English opening. Morphy was superior in open games and tactics and had an advantage of age. Nevertheless Staunton wasnt willing to risk his reputation by playing Morphy, and therefore used every possible excuse to decline all match requests. Eventually Staunton and his plotting was one of the reasons why Morphy sank into depression.
Now since I dared to critisize Morphy by claiming he had weaknesses (!) I hope I wont get traditional responses like "BS! Morphy was perfect chess player he would have beaten Staunton 100-0!" :-)

19 ( +1 | -1 ) Tal vs. BronsteinTal played Bronstein a lot of times...
Their results checked from the 4 books with all Tahl's games commented in informatorese (yes, I'm nutty enough to own those 4 + Capablanca's 2)
Their results:
+8 -4 =17 for Tal.
bluebabygirl
36 ( +1 | -1 ) brucehumthose tal -bronstein games were in tournaments not match . to me a match is totally different animal. too many other factors in tournament chess . match is more suited for determining better player . I personally love both players but i am thinking bronstein would have won considering if both were playing at thier peak. yours BBG

He is amazing!!!

26 ( +1 | -1 ) please addBotvinnik - Keres to the list. Many people thought that Botvinnik was the best of his peers but that Keres was without peer. Without the government's interference Botvinnink, one of my favorite players, probably would not have been World Champion.
bluebabygirl
45 ( +1 | -1 ) to boggwell said I have discussed that very point many times with my dad's friends and all agree that Keres was his superior . just look at results of AVRO 1938. KERES OBVIOUSLY PLAYED BETTER THEN AND FOR MANY YEARS WAS THE BETTER PLAYER. I HAVE STATED MANY TIMES THAT ALTHOUGH KERES CHESS CAREER WAS GREAT SO WAS IT SAD - MEANING HIS BEING CHEATED OUT OF THE TITLE BY THE GOVERNMENT. YOURS bbg
