Opinions please!!! <<INCREDIBLE Four months ago i created a game, 'Till the roof falls off', a player named al_carejo joined. To my surprise he is rated very high so obviously i chose to play on. We played normally for a while until things began to come my way in the game when obviously i was in the position to win! At this pint he started to move every three days exactly on the last minute! even when i have a queen and castle against just his king. So i continue playing on as he was doing legal things within the three day limit. But on the last minute today in which i have checkmate in one he postpones his games!!!!!!! And although i have no evidence for the moment, im sure he will play on with his others and just leave ours to carry on till the last minute.....It really is just getting boring and im sure he would have done this to other people along the way. I think this is probably the worse thing ive ever seen on gameknot before and i would only be happy if he got chiucked off for good, although im sure this wouldnt happen. Excuse my bad english, been up a while! And i would be very greatful if anyone would reply to this message with any opinions on the subject. Am i being unreasonable???

Similar incident I have endured a similar treatment. I obtained a simple, won endgame and instead of resigning, my opponent moved within the last 5 minutes, every 3rd day (thank goodness I did not accept a 14 day time control). The problem is much like players disconnecting during blitz chess on ICC or FICS. Perhaps GameKnot could instate a form of adjudication process in the event abuses of this form take place.

In the mean time, I would like to suggest it may not be appropriate to publically attack those who have caused you trouble. On many servers, this in itself may get you in trouble, regardless of who was initially wrong.

Why not contact the webmaster, perhaps there is an adjudication process I'm not aware of.

sorry to hear that i'll write his name down, he's just a sore loser. sometimes they also think, that they will lose less rating points if you improve your rating in the meanwhile, but it remembers the initial rating when the game started. however, if he makes only one muve during his postponent, you'll get the option to cancel the postponment. i don't want to say anything wrong, but the way how you describe it, you should then realy cancel it.
good luck for the future
olympio 2 ( +1 | -1 )
youc an cancel the postponment..
superblunder 40 ( +1 | -1 )
sorry luke666 that really is rude. I added the player onto my ignore list. I don't understand how a player of his rating can first of all lose so badly as he did against a much lower rated player like you, and then to play on like an idiot and not resign in the circumstances where you are 100% winning. You are totally justified in not ever wanting to play this guy again and publically showing what he did in your game.
olympio 43 ( +1 | -1 )
well.. i'm not sure if he's totally justified in publically showing what he did.. let's not let emotion interfere with our logic here..

this is a pretty obvious case though and his name may be ruined.. if that was luke's intention then he succeeded.. if not.. well it probably happened anyways.

i don't think anything warrants the abuse of someone in the public eye..

though it's hard to keep ur temper when dealing with people like this

Shropshire Lad Do not despair. I looked at the game and can understand your frustration. Maybe he's hoping for a stalemate. Just relax. Tell him how you feel (politely) and put him on ignore list. You'll get your rating points in time. Who knows what's going on in your opponents world. chess is only a little sliver of a life. Maybe his parrot died, who knows.

Buddy2 is right, Focus on your positive games. Play more games instead of worring about the tactics of another player. However, it is in bad taste to broadcast the players name on the forum. Report the incident to the Webmaster.
luke666 85 ( +1 | -1 )
Well, thankyou for al the support in general, has made me feel a little better. I have reported the incident to the webmaster before i actually made this so i shall wait for his reply.
I was quite angry last night expecting a last move win when realising that the game was now postponed. I would cancel the postponement but if he did move in the time which he wont i have him in checkmate in 1 move anyway :)
I dont mean to hurt his name in any way, i wsa just seeing if he had done it to anyone before and if his name does get hurt along the way i think he deserves it anyway, its not like everyone on gameknot will read here so im sure e wont be affected to much by it......Anyway, thankyou all for your responses and hopefully MIKE will sort something out for my game and hopefully games in future as kapinov suggested.

legal vs moral thinking What this guy did was just in a legal way. In a moral way it sucks. A man/ woman of honor does not conduct this way. Try not to let it bother you too much.
buddy2 42 ( +1 | -1 )
resign I must be unusual. When I have a bad game, a hopeless position it grates on me, and I want to get rid of it by resigning. Then I can start all over again with an even position! Only once, has an opponent asked me why I continued to play, and that was in a situation I considered I had, maybe a 5% chance of something good happening. The comment so annoyed me, I resigned at once and my opponent apologized. Sometimes you play gentlemen, sometimes jerks.
luke666 48 ( +1 | -1 )
Very very true. I really just cant believe it. If it was a younger person i could understand the immaturity but i see no reason for him playing on. If he did win through my resignation would that be a true victory to him?? I guess it doesnt matter to some people :) well, i think ive met some genuine people tyrough creating this thread so something good has come of it! :) A toast to my 9 day victory!! hopefully there is no other methodsa he can use to prolong the game after this one???
kezzerdrix 7 ( +1 | -1 )
Im facing the same problem in two of my team games, against redrook4
baby_pom 13 ( +1 | -1 )
i suggest why don't you resign? then your wait will be over, you will have the moral victory, and he will feel bad (maybe)
luke666 49 ( +1 | -1 )
Baby_porn, it is a fine suggestion but i think anyone sad enough to do this would feel bad about winning, thats there whole purpose of prolonging (i think) :) so no, + it will be more satisfying to me having his name on max opponent won agains for 50 games :D
Ive also done a little research regarding him, and a player named mlazar had exactly the same trouble with him so it isnt just me!!!! :)
And kezzerdrix, just remember theres others in the situation, i know how you feel :)
honololou 13 ( +1 | -1 )
yes its unexcusable… he may be playing outside the spirit of the game but
unfortunately he is within the rules. The only recourse
you have is to smear his name in public.
mate_you_in_fifty 29 ( +1 | -1 )
I can understand I had a similar problem with one or two players. It's very annoying. Yours very blatantly stands out,as he is just a move from being checkmated.
And equally irritating is when I play blitz on Yahoo and end up with K + R vs K and my opponent repeatedly offers me draws! That happened today.
baby_pom 14 ( +1 | -1 )
mate_u_in _50 on yahoo you have to click to close the box which can take valuable seconds in blitz, especially if done repeatedly. is very annoying.
buddy2 52 ( +1 | -1 )
Kezzerdrix's games I looked at your games against Redrook, both of which in all probablity you will win, especially with the one where you're the rook up. But I also looked at Luke 66's game and yours doesn't compare. Observe his game. He has a mate on the move! This is why it's a purely subjective thing. I guess the higher your rating, the less material up is needed to create conditions of resignation. i might play on in Kezzerdrix's games, hoping for a timeout win or a mouseslip. It's all part of the game! Is there any box to check on GK to refuse to accept a resignation???
luke666 25 ( +1 | -1 )
I dont bel;ieve you can refuse a resignation if i have read what your saying properly. Thankyou again for all comments. Reminds me of the days when social chat was up and running. I havnt used the forums since that went :)
mate_you_in_fifty 10 ( +1 | -1 )
buddy I don't think you can refuse to accept a resignation as per FIDE rules, and anyway why would you ever do that?:)
buddy2 27 ( +1 | -1 )
resignation accepted I just recalled the little message you get from GK when you resign a game. So and so accepts your resignation. Of course it's automatic. I just wondered what would happen if someone really annoyed you and you wanted to play to a checkmate, just for the personal satisfaction.
falconknight 39 ( +1 | -1 )
yeah, those people are jerks I've played al_carejo, and also redrook4, and what you people have been saying is true, I think they both did it to me too. People like that who postpone thier games once they start losing are real jerks.
luke666 37 ( +1 | -1 )
Lol buddy, i can understand that :D
Falconknight another victim!! And another player remaining nameless for the moment untill i get his permission to put his name on here has also suffered from al_carejo. I think that this should seriously be stopoed although MIKE hasnt replied to my message, do you think it bothers him that much. Should i persist???
mate_you_in_fifty 21 ( +1 | -1 )
well unfortunately,I don't think Mike can do anything really, because there hasn't been a violation of chess rules. Like someone above said,it's very immoral to not resign, but totally legal.
lexherman 76 ( +1 | -1 )
I agree It is no use to write Mike about these things, cause what they are doing is within the rules. Now what you can do and this is also within the rules is the following. You can describe this extreme behaviour on a forum like you did luke666 . I think you must describe just the behaviour and not make it too personal.
I think it is good to mention this to the person, so he can defend himself. (if there is a defence)
If you do that i think you also stay within the "rules". I can see no reason why you should be banned for that.
Then people within the GK community can decide if they want to play with a person who behaves like that.
In the end these guys can hold a competition among themselves ((-:
wreimann 20 ( +1 | -1 )
Strange I just replayed the game and find it very strange that a 2109 rated player makes so many obviously bad moves in a row. Something definitly smells here. I've put him on my ignore list
kapinov 20 ( +1 | -1 )
Arbitration I still believe some form of arbitration group should be present to administer individual cases of abuse such as this.

While it may be "within the rules", it is a blatent abuse of them.
luke666 32 ( +1 | -1 )
Agree tottaly with kapinov!!! :) And lexherman, i will send him the link of this site and see what he has to say. But his excuse for my game will not be able to accomidate all the other players he has done it to!!! :)
Mike wrote back saying he can do nothing as its within the rules so i have asked if some how we could fic the problem :D
drgandalf 65 ( +1 | -1 )
I believe putting a abusive player on one's ignore list should be sufficient as a corrective. Honoring another's right to play within the law is imperative. Respecting the webmasters decision is vital.

Part of life is dealing with frustration. We all must become masters in this arena. If we let another to frustrate us, he wins and we lose. Tolerance is important. Tolerance is the ability to grin and bear it when we strongly disagree with another. To maintain ourselves in such adversity will strengthen our character, which in turn strengthens our chess.

None of us are strong enough to eliminate improper behaviour. And lynching someone who frustrates us is improper also.
macheide 126 ( +1 | -1 )
luke666 Dear friend,

I understand you perfectly. It isn't a conduct af a gentelman.

Yes, I know that according to the rules your opponent has the right to do that. But some
people confuses the concepts of legality and ethical behavior.

If you bother to look into my games you can note something very similar. I won't mention
names of the players here, but in one of them I'm playing with the black pieces, and the
endgame is lost to my opponent, it's a piece of cake. In the other game I am playing the
white side and I have announced mate in five. In this last game my opponent lose an entire
piece in the opening whitout compensation.

What bother me is these two players had abused of his postponements rights in order, I
know, to break my patience and to exercise my right to cancel these won games! I even
write to the first player
saying: "Take your time. You are lost and I won't cancel any game".

Yes, I know, when one is in a disadvantageous position one MUST play harder, put all the
possible obstacles to your opponent, because he feels that the game is going to win by
itself. But this is not the case in these two games.

My advice is: be patient. There is a maximum quantity of days per year that these guys can
use (or must I say, abuse).

v_glorioso12 21 ( +1 | -1 )
happened to me once... me and some guy were playing 14 day (!) day/move limit, and i had a king and queen, and i was about to make another queen...and he had NOTHING. he spent the next at least 10-12 moves waiting til the last day... so, i know what its like :-S
bellepheron 21 ( +1 | -1 )
...and in the ultimate show of lack of class he let the game timeout instead of making his last move.

The joke is on him.

Congratulations on your victory.

He has nothing to console himself with, because he is a loser, and a bad one at that.
luke666 32 ( +1 | -1 )
Well :)
Anyone at that rating losing games with such obvious mistakes must be considered a little suspect!! :) especially as he has lost games to mant players of my level......
Thankyou all for your comments, patience was the answer and the victory is finally mine! :D
Goodluck to you all in your games.
